The Post-Game Window: Eating to Recover
After a hard session, young muscles are primed to refuel and rebuild, and the effect is strongest in the first hour. A player who eats well after practice recovers faster, gets stronger from the same workout, and shows up fresher tomorrow.
The formula: carbs + protein
- ✓Chocolate milk: genuinely one of the best recovery drinks for kids
- ✓Greek yogurt with fruit
- ✓Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
- ✓Cheese stick plus crackers plus an apple
Keep something from this list in the car or gym bag. The window matters more than perfection: a slightly squished PB&J eaten on the ride home beats a perfect dinner two and a half hours later.
Dinner still counts
The snack starts recovery; a normal balanced dinner finishes it. Half the plate veggies and fruit, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs is the pattern to aim for most nights.
